WISEfriends: befriending service for LGBTQI+ people

Wise Thoughts runs a peer to peer befriending service for LGBTQI+ people who may be feeling isolated or lonely. We aim to create fun, new opportunities for social interaction for those looking to build their confidence, feel more part of the community or just meet new people.

We know that living in London can be lonely at times especially when we find our social networks disrupted as they have been this year. WISEfriends wants to help and support you through these challenging times, however due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, this service will for the foreseeable future be run via telephone and video calls. We hope to open in person sessions once it is safe to do so.

What is befriending?

You’ll be matched with a befriending volunteer with whom you have something in common and we will arrange a for you to be introduced and begin to get to know each other. From there we’ll arrange a weekly catch up so your friendship can continue to grow. Our volunteers are all members of the LGBTQI+ community and receive training to help them be good listeners.

Having a befriender can be incredibly rewarding and help improve your life, but as volunteers our befrienders are there only to provide company and are not able to clean or do jobs for you. They are not like a social worker or a key worker, but they will have access to resources to be able to point you in the direction of other community services.

Is befriending for me?

The challenges we have all faced  and continue to face in this year have meant many of us have felt isolated or lonely, and we believe a befriending service can really make a difference, no matter what your age or background.

The service is open to all LGBTQI+ residents and those socialising, studying or working in the borough of Haringey, aged 16 and over as well as to existing users of Wise Thoughts.
